Mediation and Facilitation

We advocate the use of mediation between governments, communities and private sector actors at every stage of an intervention. Mediation and facilitation help ensure that expectations are managed and met, and disagreements are brought to the surface so that they can be resolved. This is especially important when engagements take place in countries already experiencing conflict or tensions, and when parties must work across ethnic, religious or cultural boundaries.

We advocate for the use of mediation between governments, communities and private sector actors at every stage of an intervention. Mediation and facilitation are communication tools which help ensure parties are speaking the same language, expectations are managed and met, and disagreements are brought to the surface so that they can be resolved constructively, and creatively.

Mediation and facilitation processes are even more imperative when engagements take place in countries already experiencing conflict or tensions, and when parties must work across ethnic, religious or cultural boundaries.

Mediation and facilitation may be used to serve a variety of purposes, including:
  • To negotiate the terms of a new agreement between a company and the government, or a company and communities.
  • To overcome particular challenges related to relationships between communities, government and private sector actors, or related contextual issues that affect those relationships.
  • To manage or de-escalate a crisis situation as a result of an unforeseen incident between the government and private sector actors, or private sector actors and communities ; and,
  • To assist governments, private sector actors and/or communities (or other relevant actors) to strategize short, medium and long-term approaches the business-development and business-peace nexus.


Mediation and Facilitation

Mediation and facilitation can serve a variety of purposes, including:
  • Company-government relations
    We tailor mediation and facilitation processes to help parties negotiate the terms of a new agreement between a company and the government; or to resolve particular issues and/or disagreements between a company and the government.
  • Company-community relations
    We use mediation and facilitation to establish preventive platforms that will help channel conflict through constructive means, or to address and resolve pre-existing issues or tense/violent relationships between companies and communities in a sustainable manner.
  • Tripartite company-community-government relations
    We use mediation and facilitation to prevent and resolve tensions or conflicts between governments, communities and companies, or to establish parameters for collaboration.
  • De-escalation processes
    We advise companies on how to de-escalate crisis situations that result from an unforeseen incident between the government and the company, or the company and communities.
  • Impartial bridge
    Serving as an impartial bridge between multiple actors, we can facilitate discussions between companies, international organisations, civil society actors, and community representatives to address common challenges and to develop collaborative solutions.
  • Joint analysis/assessment processes
    We facilitate joint processes between diverse actors interested in collaborative analysis or assessment processes.
  • Internal company/community dynamics
    We facilitate consensus-building activities and/or planning processes internal to either companies or communities in complex environments, with a view to building collaborative dynamics.
