When possible, we recommend capacity-building programmes - for communities, operational staff and executives - which build skills over time and address additional learning gaps and challenges as and when they arise, through a mix of training, mentoring and coaching. Some of the most important skills needed for long-term, meaningful capacity-building involve behavioural changes, and these require training that is not only targeted, but iterative and cumulative as well.

Some of the most important skills needed for long-term, meaningful capacity-building involve behavioural changes, which require targeted, iterative, and cumulative training.
Capacity-building may be used to serve a variety of needs, including:
- To improve communication, negotiation or mediation skills internal to a company, government entity, community, or related actor.
- To improve communication, negotiation or mediation skills between companies, communities, government entities, or related actors (in this case, capacity-building itself becomes a platform for relationship-building); and,
- To enhance specific technical skills, such as conflict analysis, environmental assessments or human rights compliance.
Our training, mentoring and executive coaching engagements can involve, but are not limited to, the following:
- Assessment methodologies
We offer training in effective and participatory social and environmental impact assessments (including running effective surveys, focus groups, facilitating meetings, undertaking mapping exercises, etc).
- Conflict analysis
We enable companies to undertake conflict analysis and track changes in the context over time for themselves, so as to be able to monitor and assess the need for operational changes.
We run separate or joint workshops and training programmes on key aspects of the field for communities and companies to raise awareness about the rights and obligations of all parties, and to identify methods for working collaboratively.
We conduct workshops with operational staff on how to integrate conflict-sensitivity across operations; we provide mentoring during the course of implementation to assist staff in assessing the impact of their new approaches, and to adapt as required.
- Skills-building for relationships
We train companies and communities in negotiation, mediation, effective listening, trust-building, emotional intelligence, consensus-building and inter-cultural communication. Such training can be undertaken separately or together (between companies and communities), depending on the objective.
- Trainer of trainer programmes
We provide training programmes specifically designed for company or community representatives who will be responsible for providing training to others.
- Executive coaching
We provide tailored, one-on-one executive coaching for senior management who have a commitment to improving internal and external company dynamics in complex and challenging environments.
